Silly Man

I refer to Ishish as my silly man. Yesterday it started raining during his naptime. I could hear him singing "Rain rain go away! Come again some other day!" over and over again as loud as could be.

-------------------------------------

After his nap Ishish came into the kitchen and asked what I was doing:

me: I'm making mac n cheese for supper.
Ishish: I really love to eat mac n cheese!
me: Great!
Ishish: I have a tummy ache.
me: Oh, that's too bad. I hope it feels better by supper so you can eat mac n cheese.
Ishish: I think eating mac n cheese will make my tummy feel ALL better!

And, yes, he ate as much mac n cheese as the rest of us and still wanted more... but it was all gone!

Recent Conversations

Here are some of the things Ishish and I have talked about this week. His return to preschool has been giving him a lot of new ideas!

me: Do you want something on top of your waffle?
Ishish: No, I big boy now. Big boys not have toppings on waffles.
After his first waffle he changed his mind and decided that having syrup on top was ok.

------------------------------------------------------

I picked up his Dora toy, one of the dozen friends he sleeps with at night, and set it in his room.
Ishish: I big boy now. Dora not be in here. (throws toy out of room)
me: (concerned... did someone tell him he shouldn't have a Dora toy?) Why?
Ishish: I big boy now. I not want to break her.

------------------------------------------------------

Ishish used the bathroom and walked away without flushing, so I called him back. Suddenly I noticed that he was holding his toothbrush and trying to flush the toilet with the toothbrush!
me: No! You don't touch the toilet with your toothbrush!
Ishish: Some kids do-
me: (cutting him off) No!! No kids use their toothbrush on the toilet!!

------------------------------------------------------

me: Did you have storytime at preschool today?
Ishish: Yes. It was a Clifford story.
me: That's neat.
Ishish: Clifford is my favorite! I want Clifford at my house!

------------------------------------------------------

Ishish: During my nap my tummy was sad.
me: Why? Were you hurt?
Ishish: I was sad because I had to stay in my room.
me: (feeling guilty about forcing a "nap" on him when he's way past that stage) Oh.
Ishish: It's wake up time now. Now I'm happy!

More Cat Stories

As you might remember, Ishish has six ducky friends. The original three have been Dada, Ishish, and I for a long time but he'd never named the other three. After one of his naps he was playing with them. He held them up and said that they were Buddy, Maude, and Squeaky cat! I thought it was so sweet that he would make one Maude even though she died a year ago. Her picture is still above his changing table and she comes up in conversation regularly.

The picture below shows us sitting in the parking lot because "people coming over". Ishish added that the kitties are crying and sick. He also pointed out that Mama (reindeer ducky) is buckling Ishish (Devil ducky) into his carseat. When we have a house showing I refer to it as people coming over. He knows that means we take the cats in the car with us and drive somewhere. They really hate to be in the car and are sure to let us know!

-------------------------------------------------

We celebrated Squeaky's birthday a few weeks ago. As Ishish is fond of birthdays, I decided to add a bit of fanfare. We went to the petstore and each picked out a new toy for her and a special can of cat food which, topped with treats, would be her cake. We also looked at all the pets that were for sale. When we were getting back into the car he said to me: "I want not just Squeaky Cat and Buddy Cat. I want another cat". I said, "I do, too." (pause) "But you will probably be a lot older when we get one." Ishish enjoyed Squeaky's birthday but seemed to think he'd get birthday cake too. So I started a new tradition that we have frozen custard (what we happened to have in the house) when it's her birthday!

Imitating Cats

Having cats in our household leads to a lot of interesting times. One morning we watched Buddy clean his face. I pointed out how Buddy licks his paw and then rubs it across his face to clean himself. After lunch Ishish started licking his hand and rubbing his face with it. Then he offered to wipe mine with his wet hand. I said, "It's true that the kitties clean each other like that but people don't!"

Lately Ishish has started standing on his stool at his sink and putting his head under the faucet to get a drink. He will tell me, in a very amused voice, "I drink like Squeaky!" (Yes, there is one faucet that we'll turn on for her, and no, she doesn't touch the faucet with her mouth.)

A while back Ishish and I were giving the cats some of their treats, which we hadn't done in a long time. After we handed some out Ishish came back to me and asked, "I have some?" I said sure, gave him the bag, and took it back after he had taken a couple out. Then I saw that instead of giving them to the cats he popped them in his mouth! Feeling very surprised and a tad frantic, I quickly explained that those were only for cats to eat! I asked, "Don't they taste funny?" and he said yes. Then he wandered off to drink a lot of water, and I scanned the bag for a list of ingredients. I was relieved that they didn't make him sick.
